Types of Driving License in Ghana

All driving licenses in Ghana are issued and regulated by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). Each class determines the type of vehicle you're legally permitted to operate.

Class A — Motorcycles & Tricycles

Covers: Motorcycles (Okada), Tricycles (Aboboyaa)

Requires specialised riding skills and passing a DVLA motorcycle riding test. Mandatory for anyone riding motorcycles or tricycles for personal or commercial use.

Class B — Private Cars

Covers: Private cars, Saloon vehicles, Personal and family cars

The most common license in Ghana. Strictly for non-commercial driving — ideal for individuals who drive for personal or family purposes.

Class C — Commercial Passenger Vehicles

Covers: Taxis, Trotro, Ride-hailing vehicles (Uber, Bolt), Commercial passenger vehicles

Any driver who earns income from driving is legally required to hold a Class C license.

Class D — Heavy Goods & Haulage

Covers: Trucks, Articulated vehicles, Long-distance haulage vehicles

Requires advanced driving skills, experience, and additional DVLA testing due to the size and complexity of the vehicles involved.

Class E — Agricultural & Industrial Machinery

Covers: Tractors, Farming machinery, Construction and industrial equipment

Commonly required for farming, construction, and industrial operations.

Class F — Learner's Permit

Covers: Learner drivers under supervision, Training vehicles used by driving schools

Allows new drivers to practice legally while undergoing training, before taking the official DVLA driving test.
